Founded in 2002 by director Shin-Yi Yang, the Boston Guzheng Ensemble has been the only guzheng ensemble in New England and received music awards including three times Youth Poetry in Silk and Bamboo, and Fidelity Young Artists Competition at the Boston Pops Grand Prize Winner. Besides giving annual concert the ensemble has participated numerous events such as TEDxBoston Adventures, CMS/ATMI National Conferences, Boston GreenFest, Pawtucket Arts Festival, Newton Asian Pacific American Network, and Boston Dragon Boat Festival. Under Shin-Yi’s direction the Ensemble has given performances at venues like Symphony Hall, Joan Hancock Hall, Fraser Performance Studio, Pickman Concert Hall, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Indian Hill Music Center, and Kresge Auditorium. In 2007, the Ensemble released its debut CD, New England East Wind.
The mission of the ensemble is to promote Chinese culture and music to the public and to bring to the audience a new sound and aural experience that are slightly different from the more typical individual performances.
