Shin Yi Yang (Director)
Founder of the Boston Guzheng Ensemble, studied gu-zheng and gu-qin with several reputable masters, such as Wang Ruey-Yuh, Professor Liang, Tzay-Pyng and Professor Wang, Hai-Yan in Taiwan and Dr. Tong, Kin-Woon, and Hon, See-Wah in Hong Kong. Ms. Yang graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (NTAA, now known as National Taiwan University of Arts), and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Ms. Yang held a gu-zheng position in Keelung Municipal Chinese Orchestra at Keelung City after she graduated from APA.

In 1995, Ms. Yang came to Boston, and was given the opportunity to perform for the local people. Since then she has been invited to give performances and lectures at The Boston Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, Boston University, Wellesley College, Paine Hall and Sanders Theatre at Harvard University. She has also given a recital entitled "Harmony with Nature" at the Chinese Culture Center of TECO in Boston.

As a gu-qin teacher, she was awarded by the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship through the Massachusetts Cultural Council's Folk Arts and Heritage Program, which is awarded annually to a limited number of master artists to support the teaching of traditional arts specific to a particular folk group or ethnic community. She was also interviewed by WGBH radio station's program called "Arts and Ideas" to talk and play gu-qin. Currently Ms. Yang is a gu-zheng instructor at Huaxin Chinese School, Huaxin School of Arts and Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (GBCCA). She also gives private lessons of the gu-zheng and the gu-qin.

Emily Chen
Emily Chen is currently a sophomore attending Bedford High School. She has been playing guzheng since the year 2000 from the age of ten. Entranced by the harp, she looked into guzheng and immediately fell in love with the instrument. Having lessons with Shin-Yi Yang at GBCCA (Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association) also opened her eyes to other Chinese activities like folk dance, dragon dance, and yang-qin. Before guzheng, she had very little musical experience. Emily has been recently composing a song, but has yet to produce it. She is currently a member of the GBCCA Youth Chinese Music Ensemble and the Boston Guzheng Ensemble.

Victoria Chen
Victoria Chen is currently a senior at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. She has been studying guzheng for five years. For Victoria, guzheng is a wonderful combination of both music and the Chinese culture. Music has always played an important role in her life; she currently studies violin and the yangqin and is also an active member in several music groups at her school and in the greater Boston community. Victoria also embraces her heritage through volunteering at cultural events and studying traditional folk dance.

Kai Leung Chow
Kai-Leung Chow, born in China, grew up in Hong Kong, came to US as the forth generation. Resident of the state of Vermont. Retired from being an Electrical Engineer for more than 20 years. Have a deep love for Chinese culture, especially Chinese music. Currently learning to play Gu-Zheng from Miss Yang Shin-Yi, learning to play Di-Zi from Mr. Pan Tai-chun. Love Gu-Zheng so much that even learn to make them. Without Gu-Zheng, for me, life would be so boring.

Cassie Huang
Cassie Huang is currently a sophomore at Andover High School. She began playing the guzheng about three years ago because she thought it was a beautiful instrument. Not only does she play the guzheng, but she has also been playing the piano since she was five years old. In addition to music, she also runs track and dances.

Karen Chen
Karen Chen is currently in the Peabody School 6th Grade. She has been playing the guzheng for 2 years. She loves the guzheng's sound and also loves playing it. She also currently plays piano and the flute and dances. Playing guzheng makes her feel connected to the Chinese music and culture.

  Serena Pang
Serena Pang is currently a 7th grader in Saint Catherine of Siena school in Norwood. She has been playing guzheng for almost two and a half years. Playing guzheng makes her feel like she is embracing the Chinese culture and learning more about her heritage. She really enjoys playing this instrument as well as piano. Besides playing, she also likes listening to music from this beautiful and melodic instrument as well as other traditional Chinese instruments. She really enjoys playing in the guzheng ensemble and would like to keep on playing this instrument.

Lily Zhu
Lily Zhu is currently in 6th grade. She has been a big fan of music for years, playing piano and flute. She started learning guzheng only six months ago, and she loves it, because it makes her feel closer to the Chinese culture. Go, guzheng, go!!!
